Abstract

This paper explores the critical role of gender equality within the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, recognizing it as both a fundamental human right and a crucial accelerator for achieving all 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Employing a mixed-methods approach, which includes quantitative analysis of national-level data on SDG 5 targets and qualitative case studies, the study investigates the intricate relationships between gender equality indicators and sustainable development outcomes across diverse socio-economic contexts. Findings reveal significant statistical correlations between advancements in gender equality metrics (e.g., female labor force participation, leadership representation) and improved outcomes in areas like poverty reduction, health, and education. Conversely, qualitative insights highlight persistent systemic barriers, including socio-cultural norms, policy implementation gaps, and deeply ingrained patriarchal structures, that impede progress despite targeted interventions. The paper advocates for a comprehensive, intersectional, and context-specific approach to accelerating SDG 5, emphasizing the need for tailored strategies that address local complexities, re-evaluate monitoring frameworks to capture the nuanced nature of gender inequality, and promote fundamental shifts in societal norms and power structures for transformative change and sustainable progress.
